At the end of 2019, Amit Shah announced the deadline for the implementation of the NRC across the country as before 2024 election poll. The nation-wide imposition of NRC had brought terrible chaos among the people of India where a lot of them mix-up NRC with CAA and also many were concerned about proving their Indian identity to the government.
NRC - National Register of Citizens:
At first, it has to be made clear that NRC and CAA are no way connected to each other and both are separate issues. National Register of Citizens is an exercise to make a record of legal Indian citizens thereby determining illegal migrants and take appropriate actions on them whereas CAA is a legislation Amendment wherein the definition of 'illegal migrants' is being amended/modified.
The needs for NRC can be seen in Assam which had an large influx of illegal migrants from neighbouring countries immediately after the independence of India . NRC was first implemented in Assam after the Republic of India using the census taken in the year 1951 but unfortunately, it was not updated further until 2005. After 2005, the government of India made an attempt to update NRC in Assam but sadly, it went in vain. observing a series of failure of the union government in updating NRC in Assam, the Supreme Court took the responsibility in 2013 to monitor the update of NRC. It is important to note that NRC was implemented only for Assam so far. later Modi government came in 2014 and they successfully updated the NRC for Assam and published the same on 31st August 2019. Now, Home Minister Amit Shah on 2oth November 2019, in Rajya Sabha, announced that NRC would be updated across the Nation and claims that every illegal migrant would be deported. Nation-wide NRC is not yet implemented but is expected to be implemented in the year 2021 as it is one of the election manifestos given by the BJP party for the 2019 election poll. It is obviously a danger for those who do not possess documental proof for their Indian Identity but NRC does have the potential to close the door of the country for illegal migrants who can be threatening terrorists.

NPR - National Population Register:
National Population Register is a document which contains the list of every individual who is residing in India; it also includes foreign citizens who have an idea/motive of residing in India for the next six months or more and foreigners who have resided in India for six months or more. NPR is the very first exercise for the implementation of the NRC. The NPR exercise was first conducted in 2010 which included 119 crore residents in the record and it was further updated in 2015 with the linkage of biometric and Aadhar details. Recently, it was expected to be updated again for the purposes of NRC during April - September of 2020 but unfortunately, it has not happened yet due to the unexpected out-break of Covid-19. So, it can be concluded that the whole process of NRC would also be delayed.
